In the Spring of 1970 it became clear that Smile was not going in a mutually desired direction. Tim Staffell decided to leave the band, indicating that he wanted to move in a different musical direction to that of Brian and Roger. His decision was justified and his departure was on amicable terms. Tim soon joined the band Humpy Bong shortly thereafter.
After Tim left Smile, Mercury Records dropped the band from its label. This signalled the end of the band.
Tim's friend Freddie Bulsara meanwhile continued to show remaining interest in Brian and Roger's efforts and convinced the two despondent musicians to give it one more shot...with him. In April 1970, the two former Smile members agreed (with a little reluctance) to form a new group with Freddie as their lead singer. Mike Grose, whom Smile knew from their gigs at PJ's in Truro, and from Roger's days with The Reaction, would be recruited as their first bass player and the new band was born. They would call this new creation Queen.
The members of Smile would come together for a brief one-night appearance at a concert organized by Roger Taylor's band 'The Cross' in December 1992. This concert featured the original line-up and they played two songs, including 'Earth' and Harry Chapman's 'If I Were A Carpenter'.
A total of six tracks were recorded by Smile in their short history. All of these songs would surface in 1982 on a Japanese-released mini-album entitled 'Gettin' Smile' released by Mercury Records of Japan. In 1997, a CD entitled 'Ghost Of A Smile' was released on the Pseudonym label in Holland. The preparation for the second release was done in direct consultation with Tim Staffell, who also contributed to the artwork and liner notes of the release.
