A brief pre-Smile biography of Tim Staffell

Tim Staffell was an active member of a number of bands during the 1960's, and eventually became a member of the band '1984' with Brian May. A great fan of the London Blues scene, he could often be found playing his harmonica in and around the London area. Both he and May were students of Hampton Grammar School.

Tim left Hampton School in 1965 and entered London's Ealing College of Art and Design. When Smile formed, he was working towards a diploma in Graphic Design from Ealing College. His artistic and creative talents can easily be seen in Smile's striking logo - developed soon after the formation of the band in late 1968.
